Tips for travelling with children

The Easter break and school holidays are a wonderful time to go on a family holiday. Perhaps you’re a little concerned about flying with children, and wondering how to keep them occupied during the flight. As well as making sure they’re well hydrated, get a good night sleep before flying and have boiled lollies to suck on to assist with changes in cabin pressure, here are a few other ways to make your flight as smooth as possible.

Wireless in-flight entertainment

Let’s face it, watching in-flight movies is a great way to pass the time and keep the kids entertained. Our Wireless in-flight entertainment is available on the majority of our domestic and international fleet, and can be accessed using your personal mobile device via our free Entertainment app for iOS and Android. This is an easy way to use multiple devices during your flight, so that the whole family can watch the latest movies, music, TV shows and much more!

High Flyer passports

We’ve recently launched the ‘High Flyer’ passport, exclusively for children aged 10 and under. Before boarding each flight, young travellers can show their passport at the check-in counter to receive a stamp to remember their flight with us. These are sure to put a smile on the faces of our younger passengers, and have them sharing the news of their adventures with friends once they return home. High Flyer passports are available at all domestic check-in counters.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family on board soon.

To be a part of the give-back program, simply sign-up to Velocity Frequent Flyer for free at or

Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival wrap report

The 2014 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s core program has come to a close, after a spectacular week of runway, beauty and business events.  Audiences were wowed by the likes of Camilla, Michael Lo Sordo, Sass & Bide, Carla Zampatti and many, many more, all showcasing their latest collections.

Virgin Australia Cabin Crew @ VAMFF

The festival’s theme of See.Feel.React focussed on making the events accessible to everyone, not just those in the fashion industry. The festival team hoped that the accessible nature of the events would allow visitors to embrace their interest in fashion and attend whichever event they desired. That didn’t stop the big name celebrities from attending, with Megan Gale & Eva Longoria being spotted in the front row at the Grand Showcase by Camilla.

Top 5 things you need to know about Velocity

Frequent flyer programs can seem confusing but there are so many benefits to being a Velocity member and we don’t want you to miss out.  To help you get your head around the program, we’ve broken it down. Here are the top 5 things you need to know about our award-winning program.

It’s free to join

Unlike other frequent flyer programs, it’s free to be a Velocity member. There is no join fee and no annual fee.

And it only takes a couple of minutes to become a member. All we need is your name, home address, contact details and security information to ensure your privacy is protected.

Status Credits vs Points

Status Credits and Points are both earned on eligible flights but the main difference between the two is in the way they reward you.

Status Credits determine your level of membership within the Velocity program. There are four levels – Red, Silver, Gold or Platinum. The more Status Credits you earn, the higher your level and the more benefits you enjoy.

Points enable you to redeem for rewards including flights with Virgin Australia and our partner airlines. Reward Seats are available from 6,900 Points and upgrades to Business start at 4,900 Points (fees and taxes apply). You can also use your Points to redeem for travel extras such as car hire and hotel stays, as well as retail products through the Velocity Rewards Store.

You don’t have to be a frequent flyer

Even if you only fly once or twice a year, it’s worth being a Velocity member because you can still reap the benefits.

eStoreFacebook_FINALOne of the easiest ways to earn Velocity Points is through credit cards. Velocity co-branded credit cards are linked to your Account so you automatically earn on your everyday purchases such as groceries and entertainment. As you can imagine, it doesn’t take long for the Points to add up! You can also transfer Points to Velocity with most credit card providers and financial institutions offering a card which allows you to do so.

Another simple way to earn Points is through the Velocity eStore. Earn Points on purchases from over 150 retailers including as Apple, ASOS and We’re also the only frequent flyer program in Australia to offer access to international department stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

Access to rewards

All your hard work deserves to be rewarded and with Velocity, it can be. We’ve been recognised for our great Reward Seat availability, meaning you’ve got more chance of getting the seats you want, when you want them.

Velocity was ranked the highest of all Asia Pacific Region programs for Overall Reward Availability in the Switchfly Reward Seat Availability Survey in 2013. The program was also recognised for the Best Redemption Ability in the Middle East/Asia/Oceania region airline category at the 2013 Freddie Awards.

Family benefits

VIR0604_13_0074_2012#1B5AAFAt Velocity, we understand how much your family means to you.

Our Family Pooling benefit allows you to pool your family members’ Status Credits into the one account. It means you can reach the next level of membership sooner. You can also pool your Points, allowing you to be rewarded faster. If you haven’t done so already, simply log into your Account and set up Family Pooling under My Benefits.

Parental Leave is another great benefit for families. If you’re expecting a new addition to the family, you can pause your Silver, Gold or Platinum membership for six months so you can pick up where you left off.

VAMFF designer interview with Camilla

Ahead of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF), we asked world-renowned designer Camilla Franks, creator of Camilla, about the inspiration behind her latest collection, and what fans can expect from her during the Grand Showcase runway show on Wednesday, 19th March.

What inspired your collection this year?

This season my AW Collection And God Created Woman was born from my inner voices and yearnings. It is a calling “To all the women with a little bit of crazy…”. I feel that as women we wear many “hats”. The collection has many exclusively designed and embellished prints that relate to each of these personas. All of these are a representation and illumination of my “psyches.” It’s a direct homage to my triumphs &   my struggles and an acceptance  of who I am- and all I can be.

What can people look forward to seeing?

In addition to our signature styles, we continue to evolve with new silhouettes – beautiful knits, and more fitted and streamlined silhouettes. The prints and embellishments are incredible and winter perfect.

The show will be big on impact & theatrics. We have Eva Longoria  sitting front row (it is the only show she will attend for the week!), we have an exciting live music collaboration and if that isn’t enough, an incredible, almost couture styled show.

What’s your favourite look in the collection?

How can I choose! It’s like picking your favourite child! I am particularly drawn to the War Of Inhibition story of prints- there is a strong Rock n Roll feel couped with my signature feminine soul. This print collection marks the point in my life where I let go of fear, judgement and embraced disorder- kind of like putting on a show really!

This year we are celebrating ten years of CAMILLA and featuring in the Grand Showcase is the perfect way to kick off the celebrations! We have our successful Hawksburn store and will be opening a new boutique in the Emporium Centre in April, so it seemed like the perfect time to show in Melbourne with VAMFF & to connect with my Melbourne tribe.

Favourite travel location in the world?

I am a global wanderer obsessed & inspired by the world, it’s people & cultures, nature. To name a few favourites…..My home Australia, India (my spiritual home), Peru, Vietnam, Mexico, America, Indonesia, China, Greece, Italy, Spain, Laos, Japan, Maldives, the Middle East.

India will always be my second home, the people, the culture, the sights & the sounds. It is so alive & vibrant.

The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival runs from 17-21 March. If you’d like to be there to see the latest from Camilla and many more top designers, Virgin Australia has a variety of holiday packages available. Check the Virgin Australia website for more details.
