June 8 2017 is World Oceans Day, which provides a great opportunity to reflect on the critical role that our oceans play in supporting our wellbeing and prosperity. It is also an opportunity to look at ways that we can help to address some of the major challenges facing our oceans.
One such challenge is the health of the Great Barrier Reef, which is under stress from the impacts of climate change. The largest local pressure facing the reef is poor water quality. Sediment smothers the coral and provides the right conditions for Crown of Thorns starfish that inhibit coral recovery after bleaching. The great thing is that something can be done and it works! Rehabilitation trials have proven that gully remediation works can reduce sediment runoff by up to 80% in less than 3 years.
Virgin Australia is proud to support the great work that Greening Australia is undertaking with local landowners to tackle runoff onto the reef. To find out more about this work, or to donate to support this work, check out the Greening Australia website here.
